Roofing Services in Emersons Green

Roof repair, flat roofing, roof replacement and new roofs for homes and businesses in Emersons Green, from one broken tile to a complete re-roof.

A roofing contractor for the whole roof

A roof is more than its tiles. There is the felt and the battens underneath, the lead that seals every joint, the chimney, the roof windows, and the gutters and boards along the edge. A fault in any one of them lets water in, and a leak is very often not where it first appears to be.

Pro Roofing works on all of it, so one roofer can find the problem and fix it. These are the 12 roofing services we are asked for most around Emersons Green. Each one starts the same way: we look at the roof and give you a free, no-obligation quote.

Roof repair in Emersons Green

A good roof repair deals with the cause as well as the damage. When a tile cracks or a ridge works loose, there is usually a reason: a perished fixing, mortar that has let go, or a neighbouring tile that has shifted. We put the fault right and check what is around it.

Pro Roofing carries out roof repairs across Emersons Green and BS16, and no job is too small. If one tile is all that needs replacing, one tile is all we will quote for.

  • Verges and gable ends repointed
  • Valleys cleared and repaired
  • Storm and wind damage
  • Sagging or torn roofing felt at the eaves

What you can expect

  • A clear explanation of what is wrong and what it needs
  • Extra work only ever done once you have agreed to it
  • A tidy site and the old materials taken away

Roof leak repair

A damp patch on the ceiling tells you there is a leak. It does not tell you where. Rain can get under a tile at one end of a roof, run down the felt and drip through somewhere else entirely, which is why sealing over the stain rarely works for long.

We start a roof leak repair by tracing the water back to where it gets in. Often that is a small thing: a cracked tile, a gap in the flashing, a blocked valley. We tell you what we have found before we fix it.

Common sources of a roof leak

  • Flashing that has pulled away from a chimney or wall
  • The seal around a roof window
  • Cracked or dislodged tiles
  • Valleys blocked with moss and leaves
  • Splits and open joints on a flat roof
  • Worn felt under the bottom rows of tiles

If your roof is leaking now

  • Put a bucket under the drip and move furniture and electrics clear
  • Take a photo of the ceiling and, from the ground, of the roof above
  • Do not go up on the roof yourself
  • Call 07935 672190 and tell us what you can see

Emergency roofer in Emersons Green

Roofs tend to fail in bad weather, and bad weather does not keep office hours. If a storm has taken tiles off, a ridge has come down or rain is coming through a ceiling, call 07935 672190. Our phone line is open 24 hours a day.

Describe what has happened and, if it is safe, send us a photo taken from the ground. We will tell you honestly how soon we can be with you. The first job is always to stop the water. The lasting repair follows once the roof is dry and safe to work on.

  • Do not push on a bulging ceiling
  • Photograph the damage for your home insurer
  • Stay off ladders and off the roof

Flat roof repair and replacement

Garages, extensions, porches and dormers all rely on a flat roof, and a flat roof has a harder life than a pitched one. Water sits on it for longer and the sun works on the covering every summer. Sooner or later it cracks, lifts at a joint or pulls away from the wall.

If the rest of the covering is sound, a flat roof repair is usually enough. If it has had its day, we strip it back to the deck, replace any boards that have rotted and lay a new roof in felt or GRP fibreglass, with new edge trims and fascias where they are needed.

Roof replacement

Every roof covering wears out in the end. The felt underneath goes brittle and tears, the battens rot where water has been getting in, and the tiles start to slip faster than they can be put back. When that happens across the whole roof, more patching is money wasted.

A roof replacement takes the roof back to the rafters. We strip it, check the timbers, fit a new breathable membrane and new battens, then tile or slate it again. Sound tiles can often go back on, which keeps the look of the house and the cost down. The four photographs here are from one of our own re-roofs.

When a new roof makes more sense than repairs

  • The same roof has needed repairs year after year
  • Felt is hanging in the loft or crumbling at the eaves
  • Tiles or slates are slipping all over the roof
  • Battens have rotted
  • The roof dips between the rafters

What our roof replacement covers

  • Scaffolding arranged as part of the job
  • Old covering, felt and battens removed
  • Timbers checked and repaired where needed
  • New breathable membrane and treated battens
  • Slates or tiles, ridges, hips, valleys and flashings

New roofs and new roofing

If you are extending, converting a garage or putting up a garden building, the roof is the part that has to be right first time. We carry out new roofing for homeowners and builders, pitched and flat, from the membrane to the last ridge tile.

On an extension the new roof has to join the old one properly. That means tiles that sit well with the existing roof, and lead work at the junction that will stay watertight for the life of the roof.

Slate and tiled roofs

Most houses in Emersons Green and Lyde Green have concrete interlocking tiles. The older streets of Mangotsfield, Downend and Staple Hill have more clay tile and natural slate. Each is fixed in a different way and each fails in its own way, so it helps to use a roofer who works with all three.

We repair and re-cover pitched roofs of every kind. That includes the details: ridges and hips, verges, valleys and the vertical tile hanging on dormers and bay windows.

Lead work and chimney stack repairs

Chimneys take more weather than any other part of a house. Mortar washes out of the joints, render cracks, pots work loose, and the flashing at the base is one of the commonest places for a roof to let water in.

We repair chimney stacks from the pots down, and take down stacks that are no longer used, making the roof good over the top. We also do our own lead work, including lead welding for the awkward shapes that cannot be folded from a single sheet.

Velux roof window installation

A roof window brings daylight into a loft room, a landing or a kitchen extension without altering the shape of the roof. It also makes a hole in the roof, so the weatherproofing around it has to be done by someone who understands the roof as well as the window.

We fit new Velux windows and replace old ones that have misted up or started to leak. Each one goes in with the flashing kit made for your tile or slate, and the roof covering is made good around it.

Roof window work

  • New Velux windows fitted
  • Old or leaking roof windows replaced
  • Flashing kits matched to the roof covering
  • Roof windows renewed as part of a re-roof

Worth knowing

  • A like-for-like replacement is usually fitted from the roof side
  • Replacing a window in the same opening is the simplest job
  • A leak beside a roof window is often the flashing, not the glass

Guttering, fascias and soffits

Gutters do a simple job, and when they stop doing it the house soon shows it: green streaks down the wall, damp inside and rot in the boards the gutter is fixed to. A leaking joint or a sagging length is often quick to put right.

When the fascia boards behind have gone soft, it is time to renew the roofline. We fit new fascias, soffits, gutters and downpipes, and we check the felt at the eaves while the old boards are off, because that is where it usually fails first.

Roofline work

  • Leaking and sagging gutters repaired
  • New gutters and downpipes
  • Fascia boards and soffits replaced
  • Eaves felt renewed behind the gutter

Signs to look for

  • Water spilling over the gutter in heavy rain
  • Drips from a joint long after the rain stops
  • Flaking paint or soft timber at the roofline
  • Birds or wasps getting in behind the boards

Wall cladding

An exposed gable end or a tired dormer can let in as much weather as a poor roof. Cladding protects the wall behind, tidies up cracked or stained render and never needs painting.

We fix cladding on battens over a breathable membrane, so the wall behind stays dry and can still breathe. Corners, window reveals and the junction with the roof are trimmed and sealed to match.

Roof inspections and reports

Sometimes you simply need to know what state a roof is in. You might be buying a house and the survey has raised a question. You might be a landlord who wants a record, or you might have noticed a few bits of tile in the gutter.

We inspect the whole roof: the covering, ridges and hips, chimneys, lead work, flat roofs and the roofline. You get a plain-English report of what we found, what needs doing now and what can wait, with photographs where they help.

What is the difference between a felt roof and a GRP fibreglass roof?

A felt roof is built up from layers of bitumen felt bonded to each other. It is a proven covering at a sensible price. A GRP roof is glass fibre matting set in resin and laid as one piece, so it has no joints across the roof, and it is finished with a coloured top coat. We will recommend one or the other once we have seen the roof and how it is used.

Can my old roof tiles be re-used on a new roof?

Often, yes. Clay and concrete tiles frequently outlast the felt and battens beneath them. When we strip a roof we set the sound tiles aside, replace the ones that are damaged and lay them back over the new membrane and battens.

Do I need scaffolding?

For a small repair that can be reached safely from a ladder, no. For a re-roof, chimney work or anything that takes time at the edge of the roof, yes. Where scaffolding is needed it is priced in the quote, so there are no surprises.

Do I need planning permission for a roof window?

Most roof windows on houses fall under permitted development and do not need a planning application, but there are exceptions, including flats, listed buildings and conservation areas. Check with South Gloucestershire Council or Bristol City Council if you are not sure.

Can an unused chimney be removed?

Yes. A chimney stack that no longer serves a fire can be taken down below the roof line and the roof tiled over the top. That removes a common source of leaks and of repair bills. If the chimney is shared with a neighbour, you will need to agree it with them first.

Do you work for landlords and businesses?

Yes. As a roofing contractor we work on rented houses, flats, shops and other business premises as well as family homes. We can write a roof report for your records.
